Fixing Box Dye

First, no judgment. Box color is one of the most common things I see, and reaching for it usually comes from a good place — you wanted a change, or to cover grays, and you wanted it now. So if you're reading this slightly panicked about what you did last weekend, take a breath. It's fixable. Let me explain what's actually going on.

Why box color is so tricky to undo

Drugstore box dye is formulated to work for as many people as possible without a professional involved. To do that, it deposits a lot of pigment, evenly and deeply, into the hair shaft. It often contains metallic salts and heavier developers, too.

That's great for instant coverage. It's not great when you later want dimension, lightness, or a different tone — because all that concentrated pigment has to be coaxed back out before we can build something new. Box color also tends to grab darker and flatter on the ends, which is why home color jobs often look slightly "off" even when the color on the box looked perfect.

What color correction actually involves

Color correction is less like painting a wall and more like restoring a piece of furniture. We're removing, neutralizing, and rebuilding — sometimes across more than one appointment — while protecting the integrity of your hair the whole way.

Because every situation is different (how many times you've box-colored, how dark, how damaged the hair already is), there's no flat "correction price." It's done by the hour, and I'll always give you an honest plan and estimate before we start. Sometimes that plan is one session. Sometimes, to keep your hair healthy, it's a journey of two or three. I will never fry your hair to rush a result.

The most important thing: don't keep layering

The single best thing you can do right now is stop. Don't apply another box on top to "fix" the first one, and please don't try a home bleach kit. Each layer makes the correction longer and riskier. Send me a few photos in natural light and we'll figure out the smartest path forward.
